PERSONAL: Brian James Butterfield... Married with two children... Attended the University of Maine where he lettered in baseball and basketball in 1976... Transferred to Valencia Community College and was named Florida Junior College Player of the Year in 1977... Moved to Florida Southern College for two years and was a member of the 1978 National Championship Team... After beginning his professional career in 1979 he returned to Florida Southern to complete his bachelor's degree in physical education in 1980... Following his professional season he returned to coach in the fall at Florida Southern in 1979 and assisted at Eckerd College in 1980-81... Son of the late Jack Butterfield who had served as Vice President of Player Development and Scouting for the New York Yankees.

PLAYING CAREER: Signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees in 1979 and assigned to Oneonta where he hit .218 in 58 games... Split the 1980 season between Fort Lauderdale where he appeared in eight games and Greensboro of the Southern League (AA) where he hit .227 with 13 RBI. ... Earned team MVP honours in 1981 with Fort Lauderdale of the Florida State League... Hit .286 in 94 games with seven doubles and 27 RBI... Reached AAA with Columbus in the Yankees system in 1982, hitting .417 in 13 games... Hit .238 with 24 RBI in his final pro season with the Padres' Florida State League affiliate in Miami in 1983.

COACHING CAREER: In his first year after his playing career he began coaching career as a roving infield instructor in the Yankees organization... Remained with the Yankees through the 1995 season, reaching the Majors as First Base Coach with the Yankees in 1994-95... Made coaching or managerial stops at each level in the Yankee system, also serving as a roving instructor in 1991... In his first season as a manager in 1988 was named the Gulf Coast League Manager of the Year... Led Sarasota to a 45-18 record and won the Gulf Coast League Playoffs... Joined the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1996, where he spent two seasons as a roving minor league infield instructor, minor league manager and scout of Major League talent in preparation for the expansion draft.... Was the third base coach and infield instructor for the Arizona Diamondbacks under manager Buck Showalter for three seasons from 1998-2000... Returned to the Yankees organization as Manager of the Tampa Yankees and led Tampa to the 2001 Florida State League (A) Championship where they were named Co-Champions with Brevard County... Tampa finished the season with a 77-62 record and a first-place finish ... Joined the Blue Jays organization as Third Base Coach on June 3, 2002 ... Spent the last 11 years with the Blue Jays, serving as Third Base Coach for parts of six seasons from 2002-07, as Bench Coach from 2008-09, and again as Third Base Coach each of the last three seasons, working on John Farrell's staff the last two.
