Coaches Sharpen Skills at Pirates Clinics

Photos

The Pirates have placed an emphasis on conducting instructional baseball clinics for youngsters for many years, and certainly still do. However, the ballclub also believes it's important to help the coaches who work with kids on a regular basis to become better teachers of the game. The Pirates Winter Coaches Clinic Program was designed with that purpose in mind.

Three such clinics were scheduled at the Pirates Indoor Baseball Center at Boys & Girls Club in Shadyside early this year. The first two took place on January 19 and February 9 and were run by former Pirates Grant Jackson and John Wehner. The topics covered were the fundamentals of hitting and fielding respectively. The final clinic -- which will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m. -- will cover pitching and throwing with Jackson in charge once again.

The goal of the program is to help educate local youth coaches -- primarily those involved with the Pittsburgh RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities) program -- on techniques and strategies that will enable them to be more effective. As incentives to attend the Winter Clinic Program, participating coaches have the opportunity to receive complimentary Pirates game tickets, autographed memorabilia and the chance to have the Pirates coaching staff come to their home field to conduct a clinic for their baseball or softball organization.
