Fantasy Baseball is an integrated math program for students in grades 4-8. Students learn mathematics skills through baseball statistics in a way that is fun and engaging, and use statistics from current Pirates Players, as well as player cards they create, to compete against one another in simulated baseball games. The program promotes higher order science, technology, engineering and math skills (STEM).
Pirates Charities expanded the program in 2013, partnering with a number of local schools, nonprofits and community groups to offer the Fantasy Baseball math program to more than 1,000 kids in the region. Participating groups this year included the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western PA, Sarah Heinz House Association, Methodist Union of Social Agencies, Carlynton School District, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, Pine Richland School District, Extra Mile Education Foundation and Evergreen Boys and Girls Club. The year culminated in a playoff tournament and World Series at PNC Park in June, 2013, where two students from the LaRosa Boys and Girls Club in McKeesport were named World Series Champions.
Applications will be available for the 2014 program in early fall of 2013, and participation is open to any public or private school or non-profit operating an after-school program.
