There's a good chance I'm enjoying the outdoors as you read this. Calling me an avid outdoorsman and a hunter is an understatement. If I'm not playing baseball or spending time with my family, there's nothing else I would rather be doing.
I always have had a great love for outdoor stuff whether it's hunting, fishing or simply cutting wood. Ever since I was a little boy growing up in Wisconsin, I've loved just being outdoors. My dad was a big outdoorsman. My whole family was brought up that way. Any spare moments growing up were pretty much spent outside.
Bow hunting for white-tailed deer is probably my favorite activity. I travel around throughout the country and go hunting and fishing quite a bit. I've probably hit all of the states in the Midwest and a few out West. Most of it is done in Wisconsin, though, where I live in the offseason.
Even though I now pitch for the Mariners, I haven't spent any quality outdoor time in the Pacific Northwest yet. I was supposed to go to Montana a couple of years ago, but the trip got canceled. That's the closest I've gotten so far.
There aren't that many baseball players who share the same passion for the outdoors as I do. I've met a few guys who like hunting, though, and like to talk shop, so to speak, every now and then.
There are quite a few guys who I probably wouldn't take on a hunting trip with me. Some of the guys think I'm crazy for what I do. I know Richie Sexson just shakes his head all the time. He doesn't think he could ever shoot a deer.
One of the great parts of being a dad is sharing the outdoors with my sons. My oldest boy is six and my youngest boy is three. They both love going outside and playing. I take them outside all the time. They're not that good at being quiet yet, but it's still fun taking them out.
Jarrod Washburn won 10 games for the surprising Mariners this season, the fifth time the left-hander has reached double digits in victories during his career. He also started 32 contests, tying his career high.
