John Smoltz allowed two runs on four hits in eight innings, but Jason Bergmann held Atlanta's offense to just one hit in six innings. The Braves loaded the bases against Nats closer Chad Cordero in the ninth, but Scott Thorman struck out on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to end it.
