The A’s added whole new meaning to the phrase “dog days of summer” on Thursday night.
Oakland held its seventh annual Dog Day at the Park for the team’s series opener against the Yankees. Fans that pre-registered were able to bring their canines to the Coliseum and participate in activities that included a “Pup Rally” in the parking lot outside the stadium and a “Pup Parade” around the field.
About an hour before the game started, a large crowd of humans and dogs began marching around the perimeter of the Coliseum grass, before settling in to their seats in the Plaza Reserved section to watch the game.
The goal for this year’s Dog Day was to break the Guinness World Record for most dogs to attend a sporting event. The number required was 600, and based on the number of parade participants, the dog loving-contingent of A’s fans made history by having 718 dogs in attendance.
