Safe call stands as Nationals lose challenge
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com
WASHINGTON -- Nationals manager Matt Williams lost an instant replay challenge in the fifth inning of Sunday afternoon's 4-0 victory over the Phillies at Nationals Park.
With the Nationals leading, 1-0, catcher Jose Lobaton tried to pick off the Phillies' Cody Asche at second base to end the inning. Second-base umpire Tripp Gibson called Asche safe.
Williams challenged the call, and after three minutes and three seconds, the ruling stood. A replay showed that shortstop Ian Desmond tagged Asche before the latter reached the bag.
"We are not going to go out there unless we are sure. We saw it one way and New York saw it another way," Williams said. "You can't do anything about it except move on from there."
However, no damage was done as Cole Hamels grounded out to end the threat.
