Prospect Walters homers for Triple-A Syracuse

Infielder Zach Walters, the Nationals' No. 10 prospect, homered on Friday and Triple-A Syracuse defeated Durham, 8-2.

Walters finished the night 1-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. He has homered 10 times in 24 games since returning to Triple-A last month after a stint in the Major Leagues.

Walters began the season with Syracuse and was called up to Washington when Ryan Zimmerman fractured his thumb in early April. Walters played mostly a reserve role with the Nationals, but he did homer three times in 33 at-bats.

Back with Syracuse once again, Walters is getting regular work at second base, shortstop and left field. Since returning to the Minors, he is hitting .290 with 28 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

In Friday's victory, right fielder Steven Souza, the Nationals' No. 14 prospect, went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored. He also has spent time in the Major Leagues this season and has only played 52 games with Syracuse. Still, he leads the International League in batting average (.349), on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.543).
