Nats pondering coaching duties
WASHINGTON -- According to two baseball sources, the Nationals are leaning toward Trent Jewett being the third-base coach and Tony Tarasco the first-base and outfield coach.Jewett spent the last year-plus as the team's first-base coach. He would replace Bo Porter, who was recently named the manager of the Astros. Tarasco has spent the last few years as an outfield Minor League Coordinator for the Nationals. He is credited for helping Bryce Harper become an above average outfielder. Tarasco would also replace Porter as the outfield coach. One person said that Tony Beasley is considered a candidate to become the third-base coach, but the Nationals are in need of a outfield coach, Beasley is an infield coach.. They need an outfield coach after Porter left the Nationals.
The Nationals' Major League coaching staff was offered contracts recently, and that means bullpen coach Jim Lett, hitting coach Rick Eckstein and bench coach Randy Knorr most likely will be back for the 2013 season, according to a baseball source.
The Nationals re-signed catcher Carlos Maldonado to a Minor League contract. They also signed outfielder Ray Kruml to a Minor League deal.
