Willingham homers, Kearns hits slam

Outfielders go yard but rally falls short in loss to Cardinals

Cardinals at the plate: Center fielder Colby Rasmus got five hits and three RBIs, while right fielder Ryan Ludwick went 2-for-4 with five RBIs. The Cardinals collected 14 hits in the game.

Nationals at the plate: Austin Kearns hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning. Left fielder Josh Willingham homered in the second, drove in two runs and scored three times. Nick Johnson homered as well.

Cardinals on the mound: Right-hander Kyle Lohse pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Right-hander Kyle McClellan gave up six runs in an inning of work, letting the Nats back in the game.

Nationals on the mound: Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann had his worst outing of the spring, giving up five runs in two innings. Garrett Mock gave up an unearned run in two innings, and Saul Rivera held the Cards scoreless for an inning.

Grapefruit League records: Nationals 9-10-2; Cardinals, 14-6-2.

Up next: The Nationals travel to Kissimmee, Fla., on Sunday for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Astros. The two teams will face each other for the fifth time this spring. The Nationals are 2-1-1 against Houston. Left-hander John Lannan will start for Washington.
