The Washington Nationals today released their 2011 schedule, which includes 81 home dates beginning with Washington's 78th home opener since 1901 on Thursday, March 31 vs. NL East-rival Atlanta. The Nationals' Thursday opener is in adherence to MLB adopting the recommendation of The Commissioner's Special Committee for On-Field Matters to begin the regular season earlier and mid-week to avoid playing World Series games in November.
Beyond Opening Day, the Nationals' 81-game home slate features three visits apiece from all National League East rivals, including seven weekend sets against the New York Mets (July 29-31 and Sept. 2-4), Philadelphia Phillies (Aug. 19-21), Atlanta Braves (March 31-April 3) and Florida Marlins (May 13-15 and Sept. 16-18).
Other attractive clubs making holiday plans in DC next season are the Phillies (Memorial Day, May 30), Chicago Cubs (Fourth of July contest begins four-game series, July 4-7) and Los Angeles Dodgers (Labor Day affair kicks off four-game set, Sept. 5-8).
While nearby Congressional Country Club serves as the site of the United States Open next June, the Nationals will simultaneously host the St. Louis Cardinals (June 14-16) and Baltimore Orioles (June 17-19) at Nationals Park.
The Nationals-Orioles series at Nationals Park will conclude the 2011 version of the Battle of the Beltways, as the two neighbors square off six times, with each club hosting three games. The Nationals will visit Oriole Park from May 20-22.
In addition to the annual home-and-home series with the Orioles, a three-game visit from the Seattle Mariners, June 21-23, concludes the Nationals Park portion of the 2011 interleague slate. Washington will make interleague treks to Chicago-AL (June 24-26) and Los Angeles-AL (June 27-29).
Nationals fans will enjoy 12 homestands in all, three of which last a season-long 10 games: July 1-10, August 16-25 and September 2-11.
Local baseball fans will notice a concentration of home dates both early and late in the season. Washington opens the 2011 campaign with 16 of its first 28 games to be played at home. Then, in September, 16 of Washington's final 26 contests will take place at Nationals Park.
Washington's 2011 regular-season concludes on Wednesday, September 28 at Florida, in what is scheduled to be the final regular-season baseball game at Sun Life Stadium, the Marlins' home ballpark.
All dates and opponents on this schedule are subject to change.
