The Washington Nationals today placed right-handed pitcher Jason Simontacchi on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to July 16, with right elbow tendinitis. Tomorrow, the club is expected to recall right-handed pitcher Chris Booker from Columbus of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.
Booker, 30, is currently 1-4 with 24 saves and a 3.83 ERA (18 ER/41.2 IP) in 42 games out of the bullpen for Columbus. Booker, who ranks second in the IL in saves, has scattered one hit while working scoreless relief in five consecutive appearances, or 4.1 innings, with the Clippers, fanning six along the way.
Thanks in large part to 58 strikeouts in 42.1 innings, or 12.3 K's per 9.0 innings, Booker's batting average against this season is .201 (30-for-149).
Simontacchi, 33, is 6-7 with a 6.37 ERA (50 ER/70.2 IP) in 13 starts for the Nationals in 2007.
