The Washington Nationals today placed right-handed pitcher Jason Bergmann on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with right elbow inflammation and transferred right-handed pitcher Luis Ayala from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list. Tomorrow, the Nationals are expected to select the contract of left-handed pitcher Mike Bacsik from Columbus of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcements.
Bergmann is expected to miss just two starts while on the disabled list. The 25 year-old is 1-3 with a 2.76 ERA in eight starts this season, and his .162 batting average against is the best in baseball among pitchers with enough innings to qualify. After noticing the right elbow inflammation, the Nationals yesterday ordered an MRI on Bergmann's elbow and results returned negative.
Bacsik, 29, is expected to start Saturday night's 7:05 p.m. contest vs. Baltimore. Bacsik is currently 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA (16 ER/36.0 IP) in nine games (five starts) for the Clippers. He has walked just six and struck out 28 in 36.0 International League innings. Bacsik, who last pitched in the big leagues in 2004, is 5-5 with a 5.88 ERA in 22 career games (15 starts) with Cleveland (2001), New York-NL (2002-03) and Texas (2004).
The transfer of Ayala to the 60-day disabled list does not affect the date (May 27) in which he is eligible to be reinstated to the 25-man active roster.
