Washington Nationals announce Vice President Dick Cheney to throw Opening Day ceremonial first pitch

|
WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals today announced that Vice President Dick Cheney will throw the ceremonial first pitch at the team's Home Opener on April 11, 2006 at RFK Stadium.
Marking the start of the Nationals' second season, Vice President Cheney continues the Washington baseball tradition, dating to 1910, when a president or vice president has thrown the ceremonial first pitch.
The first vice president to toss the pitch was Charles Dawes in 1926. The last vice president to do the honors was Hubert Humphrey in 1968.
Since 1910, twelve presidents and four vice presidents have thrown the first pitch in Washington. In 2005, President George W. Bush launched the Nationals' Inaugural Season, delivering the first pitch for the team's debut.
"The Nationals are pleased to continue the time-honored baseball tradition in our Nation's Capital, and welcome the Vice President to RFK Stadium," said team president Tony Tavares.
