Following today's game at Wrigley Field, the Washington Nationals placed first baseman Nick Johnson on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to June 27, with a right heel contusion. Tomorrow, prior to the series opener vs. New York (NL) at RFK Stadium, the Nationals are expected to select the contract of outfielder Matt Cepicky from Triple-A New Orleans. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

Cepicky, 27, was hitting .274 with 14 home runs and 58 RBI for the Zephyrs at the time of the promotion. Cepicky will likely return to the big leagues for the fourth time in as many seasons, as he played for the Montreal Expos in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Cepicky, who bats left and throws right, is a .218 (31-for-142) career hitter with eight doubles, four home runs and 18 RBI in 69 big league games. He led New Orleans in doubles (19), home runs and RBI, while ranking second with a .500 slugging percentage, upon having his contact selected by Washington.

Johnson, 26, was hitting .320 with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 74 games before sustaining the injury while crossing home plate on June 26 vs. Toronto. Johnson led Washington in RBI at the time of the injury.
