Carlos Beltran of the Kansas City Royals has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period of April 12-18.

Beltran led the American League in slugging (1.130), runs scored (10), total bases (26), and home runs (five) last week and tied for the top mark with nine RBI. The center fielder batted .391 (9-for-23) with two doubles and a .517 on-base percentage in six games last week. Beltran hit his five homers over a four-game span, which included a 4-for-5 day with two home runs at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday. In that contest, his second homer of the day tied the game in the ninth inning before the White Sox rallied for the win in the bottom of the frame. This was Beltran's third career weekly award and the first by a Royal since he and then teammate Raul Ibaqez shared honors for the week ending July 21, 2002.

Other candidates were Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney (.333, 4 HR, 8 RBI); Minnesota outfielders Jacque Jones (.458, 1 HR, tied for AL highs with 9 RBI and 4 stolen bases) and Lew Ford (.471, 1 HR, 7 RBI); Texas second baseman Michael Young (.469, 1 HR, 5 RBI, Major League-best 15 hits); Oakland outfielder Jermaine Dye (.346, 4 HR, 8 RBI); Baltimore first baseman David Segui (AL-best .500, 1 HR, 4 RBI); and Cleveland outfielder Matt Lawton (.368, 3 HR, 9 RBI).

Pitchers on the weekly ballot were the top two finishers of last year's AL Cy Young Award voting, Toronto ace Roy Halladay (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and Chicago White Sox right-hander Esteban Loaiza (2-0, 3.00 ERA, 15.0 IP). Halladay and Loaiza threw the AL's only complete game shutouts last week. Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award American League Player of the Week Carlos Beltran with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece from its Safari collection.
