Nats recognize need for catching depth
Club doesn't want to rush prospect Norris to Majors
WASHINGTON -- Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo acknowledged recently that the team plans to add catching depth to the Minor League system after the season.
Washington found itself in a dilemma last week after catcher Wil Nieves injured his left hamstring against the Phillies. The Nationals didn't have a veteran catcher in the system to bring up, so they acquired Jamie Burke from the Mariners.
Rizzo didn't have any intentions to rush Derek Norris, the team's Minor League Player of the Year, to the big leagues.
"It's a point of emphasis we have to make this winter," Rizzo said about the catching spot. "We have to identify good, young six-year free agents or [make Minor League trades] to get some depth in that position."
