Garate completes Belliard deal
Minor League left-hander heads to Nationals from Dodgers
The Nationals acquired left-hander Victor Garate from the Dodgers on Wednesday to complete the trade involving infielder Ronnie Belliard.
Washington traded Belliard to Los Angeles on Sunday for right-hander Luis Garcia and Garate, who was the player to be named in the trade.
Garate, who was claimed off waivers by the Nationals as part of the deal, has been an effective reliever in the Double-A Southern League this season, having posted a 2.04 ERA and a .191 opponents' batting average in 47 appearances with Chattanooga. He also has 56 strikeouts in 53 innings while stranding 17 of 21 baserunners this season.
The 24-year-old Garate is 23-7 with 15 saves and a 3.25 ERA along with 404 strikeouts in 315 1/3 innings over five professional seasons. He entered this season as one of the Dodgers' top 25 prospects, according to Baseball America.
