Nationals at the plate: Felipe Lopez opened the game with a hit, but he was promptly erased on a double play. Washington's next hit came in the fifth inning by Nick Johnson, and he also was retired on an immediate double play. Garrett Guzman put the Nationals on the scoreboard with a home run beyond the right-field bleachers in the sixth.

Orioles at the plate: Baltimore had four multi-run innings on Sunday, the first one being a four-spot in the third that was keyed by RBI singles from Melvin Mora, Kevin Millar and Brandon Fahey. Brian Roberts drilled a two-run double in the fourth, and Luke Scott sent a towering two-run homer to the right-field bleachers in the sixth.

Nationals on the mound: John Patterson cruised through two perfect innings, but he got hit hard in both the third and fourth. The right-hander wound up allowing eight hits and six earned runs, sinking his team to an early six-run deficit. Southpaw Arnie Munoz got two quick outs, but he went on to give up an infield single and a deep two-run homer.

Orioles on the mound: Daniel Cabrera was dominant on Sunday, a trait best evidenced by his five-pitch fourth inning. Cabrera gave up a leadoff hit in the first, and then retired nine straight batters -- four of them on strikeouts -- before allowing a leadoff hit in the fifth. Cabrera gave up three hits, including a long home run, before being removed in the sixth.

Grapefruit League records: Nationals 8-11-2; Orioles 8-8-2.

Up next for Nationals: The Nats will return home to Viera, Fla., for a Monday game against the Mets at 1:05 p.m. ET. Southpaw Mike O'Connor will take the ball. Washington also will find some work for right-handed relievers Joel Hanrahan, Jon Rauch and Chad Cordero.

Up next for Orioles: The O's get their only day off of the spring on Monday, which coincidentally falls in line with St. Patrick's Day. Baltimore will continue its Grapefruit League slate on Tuesday in a 1:05 p.m. game against the Twins at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. Offseason trade acquisition Matt Albers will get his first chance to toe the rubber as a starter.
