Nationals at the plate: Robert Fick's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fifth inning against top pitching prospect Matt Harrison. Angelo Jimenez and Ronnie Belliard both contributed a double.
Braves on the mound: Braves starter Lance Cormier improved his bid for the starting rotation, allowing one hit and recording three strikeouts in three scoreless innings. Bob Wickman surrendered a double in a scoreless inning. Mike Gonzalez also pitched a scoreless frame.
Nationals on the mound: Starter Jerome Williams completed a scoreless first and then was victimized during a six-run second inning, during which in a span of five batters, he allowed three hits and issued two walks. Luis Martinez and Tim Redding combined to allow three hits and issue five walks during a seven-run fourth inning.
