Washington Nationals announce Gifford's Ice Cream & Candy Co. as 2008 partner01/23/2008 3:18 PM ET
The Washington Nationals today announced a partnership with Gifford's Ice Cream & Candy Co. as the team enters its first season in Nationals Park. Gifford's, founded in Silver Spring, MD, will serve scooped ice cream and novelties through 2011 at the Nationals' new home in Southeast Washington. Gifford's will have a branded concession stand on the main concourse featuring their scooped ice cream. Additionally, Gifford's has partnered with the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation to create the "Dinger", a vanilla ice cream and chocolate cookie sandwich which will be sold at various concession stand locations and at Gifford's carts, located throughout the ballpark. A portion of the sale of each sandwich, also offered at all Gifford's locations, will be donated to the Dream Foundation. The "Dinger" will make its debut on March 30, 2008 at the Nationals Opening Night game vs. the Atlanta Braves at 8:05pm. "The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation is proud to partner with Gifford's, a local company with a premier product all native Washingtonians know and love," said Nationals Dream Foundation Chair Marla Lerner Tanenbaum. Thus far, the foundation has committed to building a Diabetes Pediatric Care Center with Children's National Medical Center and a baseball academy. "We really wanted to be a part of what the Washington Nationals and its Dream Foundation are doing, revitalizing a part of our city, and provide opportunities to young people in our city," added Gifford's spokesman Neal Liberman. Since it's creation in 1938, Gifford's has been using the finest ingredients to serve homemade super-premium ice cream and candy, with classic rich, creamy tastes that hark back to earlier times. The founder, John Nash Gifford, spent years perfecting his recipes to ensure the highest quality and unique flavors. Gifford's now has four stores throughout the metro area, in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Rockville, MD as well as a Downtown Washington, DC location. Washington Nationals pitchers Mike Bacsik and Tim Redding will scoop ice cream and greet customers at Gifford's Downtown shop, located at the corners of 10th and E St. NW, on Thursday, January 24 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, as part of the Nationals 2008 Winter Tour. Also, beginning on Thursday through the end of January, all customers wearing Nationals gear will receive 10% off their purchase at all Gifford's locations.
